The reflector effect

Look at those these photos for a second:

Same exact person, camera placement, and time of day taken within 2 seconds of each other. The only difference is a $15 piece of fabric called a reflector!

The cheat code nobody is talking about

We get flooded with comments every week asking about our lighting setup and historically we have always said “keep it simple, just go outside.”

The thing is though…. direct sun outside can be a great light source, but it's also harsh. It blows out highlights and carves shadows under your eyes that is near impossible to fix in editing. Reflectors take care of this exact issue by evening out light on a person/object so that the bright look is maintained, but it’s much softer.

The most important part of the equation: The angle

Here's where it gets fun, remember geometry class? The pythagorean theorem? 📐 You're going to use those principles to map three points: the sun, you, and the reflector. Map where the sun is, map where you're standing, then angle the reflector so it catches that light and redirects it straight at you. Move any one of those three points and the whole equation shifts.

Note: I have two reflectors linked. I would highly recommend getting the version with the stand if you film your content alone!
