Hi Reader!
Happy Week 4 of Content Camp 🏕️
If you're new, welcome! If you've been with us, you know the drill: the lesson's on the feed, the real depth is right here. The feed is the trailer and your email inbox is the full episode.
Missed last week? Catch up here before you dive in.
This week's lesson is already live on the feed → see the post. Watch it for the quick version, but everything below stands on its own.
The truth about gear
We get dozens of messages every week asking how we film such high-quality content, and people are always surprised when the answer is "mostly our phones." Here's the thing to internalize before you spend a dollar: equipment doesn't make good content. Your creative eye, your vision, and your personality do. What gear actually does is remove friction from good content. So the goal isn't to buy the most, it's to buy the right things, in the right order.
Note that we focus on organic social media as our main content format priority, so the equipment we go over will be specific to those needs!
Start with the phone in your pocket
Before any purchase, squeeze everything out of what you already own. Four free upgrades that instantly raise your quality: clean your lens (you'd be shocked how much hazy footage we see), lock your focus & exposure so it stops hunting mid-shot, turn on 4K in settings (it's usually off by default), and film on your back camera. Do those four things and your content jumps a level before you've spent a single dollar.
Then buy in this order
When you're ready to invest, the order matters more than the list. Here's how we'd spend it, most important first:
- Audio first. Mediocre audio loses more viewers than mediocre video
- Stability second. A tripod unlocks angles which take you from “a few videos on their phone” to true curated content
- Lighting third. Natural light is our favorite lighting set up, but when it’s not available then panel and studio lights work great
- Camera last. Maybe a hot take… but only once you've mastered phone content. Social is UGC-forward, and that look usually comes from a phone anyway
Your Week 4 Field Guide is here 📋
Every week, we will drop a new section of the Camp Seventh House Field Guide to go with that week's lesson. By August you'll have the whole thing filled out and your entire content foundation in one place.
This is Week 4 of 8: Gear Essentials. Inside is the full gear breakdown (organized by the problem each tool solves) with our exact budget vs. splurge picks and how we actually use each one. Plus a buy-in-order checklist so you never waste money on something you don't need yet.
And by popular request, the Field Guides are now fillable! Type your answers straight into the PDF, or print and screenshot if that's more your vibe
